Each
week I will give homework online that correlates to the math we will be doing
in the classroom. You can go online to the
Immaculate Conception School homepage www.icsirvington.net or to the first grade
class page for the website’s link (you can also click the title of this page to
get there).
The
Problem of the Day
offers a math problem to solve every day that goes along with each lesson
in every chapter. If students do the
assigned number of Problems of the Day a week and hand them in with the rest of
their homework on Friday, I will give them extra credit in math.
The
Skills Update
offers a review of concepts from kindergarten math. This provides both lesson and practice pages.
In
Math Minutes
students can choose how many questions they have to answer in a time frame that
they also choose. We have not reached
this level of addition and subtraction at this point, but we this will be a fun
way for them to practice later on in the year.
In
Practice Activities
they have fun games to cover concepts from each chapter.
The
Vocabulary Activities
offer Hangman and Word Scramble for the vocabulary presented in each
chapter. I will assign this activity
closer to the end of the chapters when the students have been exposed to all of
the chapter vocabulary. These activities
will help with spelling as well as reading skills.
The Enrichment Activities
provide more stimulating games that cover two concepts in each chapter.
In
the Alternative Teaching
Models students can watch and listen to lessons. I suggest this as a great way to study before
a test. Having students look at the
teaching models will be a great way to have them prepared and feel more
confident for an assessment.
There are also Virtual Manipulatives that can help students will
their homework in each chapter. These are
a great resource for allowing your child to visualize and solve math
problems.
Math Alive at Home provides
information for parents about what concepts will be covered in each chapter and
what you can do for helpful activities with your children. These are optional activities, but it will
keep you more informed on what your child is learning about.
And the final part to the website is the Glossary. The Glossary can help the students find the
meaning of math words and phrases if they need help on their homework or if
they want to study before a test.
I
am assigning these activities because I think that they are a fun way for the
students to learn math, the activities will make them better prepared for
assessments, and I like to incorporate technology into their learning when it
is possible. I am expecting that it will
take a while for your child to learn how to navigate this website on their own,
so I appreciate the time and effort you put into helping them learn how to use
it.
Thank
you,
Ms.
